So, What is Word Work?
You have probably heard this term thrown around before, but Word Work is exactly what it sounds like! Working with words that students are learning in a bunch of fun and different ways. They can be working on words with a specific phonics pattern, practice sight words, and so much more. Word work is important because it helps students grow into better readers, spellers, and writers.
Why Use an Editable Word Work Template?
Picture this. You took time to plan, copy, cut, and laminate amazing centers. You couldn’t be more proud and yet somehow they haven’t completed the task, the pieces have gone missing, or they did it all wrong. (SIGH!) We’ve all been there! Which is why I love to use these Word Work activities as a way to hold students accountable and quickly assess how they are doing. They have simple and clear directions which allows students to work independently. Some modeling might be needed initially, of course, to set the expectation and review directions.
Take Back Your Prep Period!
I made this editable word work resource because it was something I desperately needed. How long does it take you to type a list of words and click print? 1 minute? Less? That is how long it now takes me to prep all of my spelling/word work centers and activities for the entire week.
It’s versatile and will work with any Literacy or Spelling program your school uses. This is especially useful because differentiated lists for different groups of students now takes me no time at all. Got a specific set of words you’re planning on teaching this week? Great! All you need to do is quickly and easily type your words into the document. Just use the Spelling List page to type up to 15 words and voila! All the words entered will automatically generate onto the rest of the pages. Then just print the activities, and it’s done!
Worried about how many copies you’ve made? Don’t like using so much paper? Some of these activities can even be put in a sheet protector and used with a dry erase marker!
Editable Word Work Activities
There are 10 activities included, but some of my favorite Word Work activities include:
- Magical Words → where you use a white crayon to write your word and then color over it with a marker to make the word magically appear.
- ABC Order → this traditional activity not only helps with alphabetizing, but with cutting, gluing, and handwriting as well.
- Bright Words → use the word box to write the words and then highlight the vowels.
- Hidden Words → the spelling words are hidden within a picture and students need to find each one and write it down.
When do I Use Editable Word Work Worksheets?
All of the time! I like to change it up and use it for centers, whole class activities, remediation, and even homework. It’s also a great way to easily make differentiated lists for your students. They can complete the same activities as their peers, while working on different words or skills. Have a planned day off? Not feeling well? The editable Word Work worksheets are the perfect thing to leave for a sub.
These ten activities will keep students highly engaged and motivated. So, if you’re ready to save time and incorporate a variety of engaging activities into your Literacy block, then click this link to see more!
